I purchased a few months at Slicehost just to muck about with them. I don’t have the bandwidth at home to run a fully fledged server like this, and at $20/mo it’s probably cheaper than the electricity I would use at the house.

how is slicehost, and what os do they run on the vps’s

With the plan I have you don’t get a cpanel or anything, but it’s quite powerful. You get to choose between a bunch of distros like CentOS, Fedora, Gentoo, etc.
I’m just tinkering with it at the moment.
