Weekly Roundup and more!

Yes, I haven’t forgotten, I’m still sticking to the minimum of one post per week.

This week has been mostly work, although I did get my favors in this past Sunday so I can call in some karma later on when I need it. Helping friends move can get pretty interesting sometimes.

Maintainence:

I reformatted the laptop on Tuesday, and also upgraded the wireless card to an Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG, which allows me to reach 54.0Mbps now :D. It also forced me to organize my files. If you’re having some issues with file management and are trying to track down where everything is, I reccomend using one of the following:

I pulled these links from econsultant.com which is quite a useful site, very utilitarian as well, which I like.

News

Sans-esque:

On the security side, there’s been a decent buzz around the Microsoft ANI Vulnerability which prompted an out of cycle patch. It doesn’t appear that the level of infection is going to hit critical mass or anything here, but I don’t believe the storm is over yet. Read up on it over at ISC if you desire.

WEP had a few more nails driven into the coffin when the Darmstadt Technical University in Germany came out with a paper detailing how they were able to crack 104-bit WEP in under a minute. It’s a good read.

If you happen to be one of the two people running Linux on your iPod, you might want to watch out for a new virus which infects that particular setup. It appears to be more of a proof-of-concept thing.

Misc:

Google appears to be coming out with a feature called “My Maps”. This would allow users to submit their own maps, with whatever they want to throw on them including overlays, attachments, their own routes and sights to see. It’s actually live on Google Maps right now.

The Apple TV has been broken into and made to do all sorts of things, including running OS X. The hacks aren’t for the faint of heart, but they aren’t impossible. The Wired article really details it well.
